The Niki Museum is located in the national park, and various restrictions were imposed on the building of the Museum. The planner decided to use the straight lines and angles, which oppose the character of Niki's works, and, thus, emphasizing the roundness and curves of her art. By combining 10-meter square units across, the dynamism of her works is conveyed, and the three-dimensional works can be appreciated from every angle. The cross-gabled roof allows Niki's central theme of "flight" to be fully presented. In the Museum, the works like Nana freely stands in the space. The architecture of the Niki Museum, which reflects the surrounding beautiful nature of Nasu, received the Prize for Excellence in the Tokyo Architectural Prize Competition in 1996. |
